Indian filmmaker Pan Nalin's Gujarati film 'Chhello Show' or 'Last Film Show' lost out in the 95th Oscar Awards race as it did not make it to the final nominations. 'Chhello Show' was selected as India's official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards, but in the final nomination list, it lost to 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (Germany), 'Argentina, 1985' (Argentina), 'Close' (Belgium), 'EO' (Poland) and 'The Quiet Girl' (Ireland).

The 'Chhello Show', directed and written by Pan Nalin, was recently presented at the 3rd International Gujarati Film Festival in Atlanta, GA, USA.

Pan Nalin's film "Chhello Show" has won the Best Gujarati Film award at the 69th National Film Awards. The film, which also received a nod at the Oscars earlier this year, tells the story of a 9-year-old boy who spends his summer watching films in a rundown movie place. The director expressed his joy at the recognition, stating that he can now believe in cinema that entertains, inspires, and enlightens. The film stars Bhavin Rabari, Vikas Bata, richa meena, Bhavesh Shrimali, Dipen Raval, and Rahul Koli.

Describing the set ways of India's exhibition sector, Nalin said to HT that India can be very hard on movies which are without any stars, studios or streamers. "The exhibition sector always underestimates Indian audiences, and the year 2022 has been big proof of that. I have always believed that the audiences are smarter than the filmmaker, if they are given the opportunity to watch films like Chhello Show, they will embrace it -- but the film must come to a cinema near them,” he was quoted saying.

Early in the movie Chhello Show (Last Film Show), wide-eyed protagonist Samay, a young boy in a small village in Saurashtra region of Gujarat, discovers 'fillam' (movie) and gets enamoured by the 35 mm medium of sound and light playing at the speed of 24 frames per second. In more ways than one, it depicts how Pan Nalin, a US-based filmmaker with roots in Gujarat, discovered and got hooked to films for life some five decades ago.
