Tina Fey reveals how she’s ready to ‘hide and retire’; says, “I’m so tired of hearing from me”
Tina Fey, the iconic comedian, writer, and cultural touchstone who embodied a whole generation of intelligent, witty comedy, is finally starting to suggest a potential exit from the limelight.Famously most associated with her nine-year run on Saturday Night Live—where she made history with her sharp wit, intelligence, and unflappable comedic timing—Fey has also become a fixture of television and film. But now, the Emmy-winning titan appears to be considering her finale.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter recently, Fey spoke candidly in a way that reflects the honesty she's always applied to her work. "The urge to hide and retire is very strong," she said, and the implication is that her time in the spotlight might be coming to its natural end. Now starring in the new Netflix comedy The Four Seasons, a remake of the 1981 film, Fey clarified that her emphasis is shifting. "I think it's time to get new voices in the mix," she said."That's something I'm already doing, but I want to do more."
Even as she continues to turn out memorable performances and guide up-and-coming stars, Fey's own inner monologue appears to be pushing her towards silence.
"Even on the way here over I was like, 'I am so tired of hearing from me,'" she admitted. "Surely everyone else is tired of hearing from the same people again and again."
For audiences, the prospect of a world of comedy with Tina Fey out front is unimaginable. From 30 Rock to Mean Girls, and through her work behind the scenes now supporting new talent, Fey's fingerprints are omnipresent in the scenery of contemporary entertainment. But most enduring of all may be Fey's devotion to passing the mic, allowing other people to tell their own stories while she steps back graciously.
If this is the start of her last act before the camera, it's a farewell written in the spirit of every joke she's ever shared: honest, generous, and rooted in heart.
