She may not know who Lucy Liu is, but she sure will not forget the fun she had on the Hollywood star’s directorial debut, Half The Sky shoot. That’s Sparsh Khanchandani, better known to a televiewer as the cute, buck-toothed Iccha from the serial, Uttaran. The nine-year-old recently shot for one of the six-part television special, which tackles gender equality across six countries - India, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Cambodia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Meena, the short film, based on India tackles the issue of child trafficking.
It is the true story of Meena Hasina, who was sold to a brothel as a child, but escapes it to become an advocate for the rights of girls and women. Sparsh, who plays the young Meena, says, “Every time I had to show fear, I would imagine all possible scary things like ghosts. The best part is that after every shot Lucy didi and the unit would gather around me and ask me if I was fine," recalls the child star.
Ask her how different it was to work to with a foreign set-up, and she says, “It’s the same, but they are more stylish.” Sarita Khanchandani, her mother fills in as she narrates Sparsh’s initial reactions to working with a new set-up. “She was quite surprised at the way they took audition. It was over in minutes! As a mother, I was quite impressed with the way they treated her, took care of her. There were times when I could not go in certain areas when they were shooting, and could only watch everything happening on the monitor. But they took care of her very well.” It does seem that wherever Sparsh goes, she becomes the cynosure of all eyes. For instance, she’s not just the youngest contestant on the dance show Zara Nachke Dikha, but also the most popular one on it.
