Ahmedabad: The mercury remained consistently above 42°C for the second consecutive day on Tuesday in the city. At 42.3°C, the maximum temperature was 2.9 degrees above normal. At 26.4°C, the minimum temperature was also 2.6 degrees above normal.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the maximum temperature on Wednesday is likely to be around 42°C. The forecast mentioned, "A rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees during the next 3 days, thereafter, fall by 2-3°C is very likely over the region. Maximum temperatures are very likely to be in the range of 41-44°C over parts of the Gujarat region and Saurashtra-Kutch during April 15 to 17."
The forecast also mentioned chances of high heat and high humidity in the coastal regions of the state during the same period. A yellow alert for heatwave has been issued for Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Rajkot and Kutch till Thursday.
On Tuesday, Kandla was the hottest weather station in Gujarat at 44.6°C, followed by Rajkot at 42.8°C, Surendranagar at 42.5°C, Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar at 42.3°C, and Amreli at 42°C.
Veterinarians have been reporting high instances of heat shock and dehydration among birds and animals. They said that sustained rise in minimum temperature means there is no apparent cooling even during night hours. A physician said, "It is a misnomer that heat shock can occur only during the afternoon hours. One must remain hydrated, wear comfortable clothes and cover the head while venturing out during afternoon hours."
