Chennai: Police moved the
Madras high court to cancel the bail granted to Periyar University vice-chancellor R Jagannathan, who has been charged with misappropriation of funds and offences under the SC/ST Act.
Admitting the plea on Tuesday, Justice P Velmurugan directed the vice-chancellor to respond to the plea by April 21.
According to police, Jagannathan violated university regulations by establishing his own organisation, the Periyar University Technical Entrepreneurs and Research Foundation (PUTER), without govt approval.
Police said he used govt funds for the organisation and operated it with university officials.
Additionally, individuals named Krishnaveni and Sakthivel lodged complaints against the V-C for making casteist derogatory remarks against them, the prosecution said.
Based on these complaints, the police registered a case under the IPC and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He was produced before the Salem magistrate court, which rejected the request for judicial custody and granted conditional bail. tnn
