New Delhi:
Delhi Police's vigilance unit arrested a policeman from Dwarka district in connection with a bribery case. The accused was identified as head constable Gajendra Singh from Jaffarpur Kalan police station. He was absconding since the registration of a case against him on April 5, officials said.
This is the second instance of a policeman's arrest by the vigilance unit this year. On April 14, the unit arrested an assistant sub-inspector posted at Model Town police station. CBI has also arrested multiple policemen this year.
In the latest case, Singh was a beat officer at the police station. He allegedly demanded a Rs 25,000 bribe in exchange for allowing a man to do construction work on his vacant land. It was alleged that Singh was attempting to misuse his authority as a police officer to extort money from the complainant, potentially by threatening to interfere in or obstruct the construction work if his demands were not met.
According to the complaint, Singh called the complainant to a discreet location to collect the bribe money. On April 4, a trap was laid by the vigilance unit at the designated location. When the complainant handed over the bribe money to Singh in his car, the vigilance team attempted to apprehend him. However, Singh fled the scene, hitting a staff member of the unit in the process, and managed to escape with the money.
A criminal case was registered under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Bhartiya Nyaya Samhita. Despite applying for anticipatory bail, Singh's application was rejected by the Rouse Avenue Court. He was eventually arrested on April 25 and taken into police custody for further investigation.
Delhi Police assured citizens that any misuse of authority by police personnel will be dealt with strictly. People can report grievances related to police misconduct on the vigilance helpline number 1064 or visit the office of the Delhi Police vigilance unit on Barakhamba Road. "The identity of complainants will be protected, and suitable legal action will be taken based on verified information," a senior cop said.
