Water Management Action Fortnight-2025 in Kolhapur
Kolhapur: The water resources department, alongwith other govt departments, experts and farmer groups representatives, inaugurated ‘Water Management Action Fortnight' on April 15 in Kolhapur district.
It will continue till April 30. At the inauguration, a resolution was passed to work in coordination to create sustainable water management and sustainable facilities as a permanent alternative in water management.
Water from five major rivers in the district—Panchaganga, Warana, Tamraparni, Dudhganga and Hiranyakeshi—was brought for worship and the attendees took a water pledge on the occasion. During the event, various activities for water literacy will be implemented and more emphasis to be placed on water management. Public awareness activities will be carried out through various programmes. It is being implemented based on the concept of water resources minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.
Superintendent engineer Abhijit Mhatre said, "There were 4 large, 12 medium, 56 small projects in the district and 302 Kolhapur-type barrages. The district has a total irrigation area of 7.68 lakh hectares and the irrigation department has 3.24 lakh hectares of irrigation area. Out of this, 2.84 lakh hectares are irrigated and it is planned to increase this in the coming days to 100%."
Chief guest Dr Anilraj Jagdale said, "Trying to supply water to an area by tanker was a mistake. If there was encroachment or pollution in the water management process at any place, it should be stopped in time. Today, 50% of water consumption in all cities was leakage. Therefore, management means planning water by implementing various measures in time. There was a need to study the old water management facilities and create sustainable water management and facilities."
Environmental expert Dr Uday Gaikwad expressed his opinion that the sugar factories and industries in the district should process and reuse water through the Zero Liquid Discharge policy. He said Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj's 1902 declaration on drought was still the main focus of water management.
Superintendent engineer of the irrigation department Abhijit Mhatre, chief guest Dr Anilraj Jagdale, environmental expert Dr Uday Gaikwad, deputy district collector Shakti Kadam, district superintendent agriculture officer Jalindar Pangre, executive engineers Smita Mane, Ashok Pawar, Devappa Shinde, deputy superintendent engineer Sanjay Patil, along with farmers' representatives, were present.
