Dindigul: Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a woman on April 13.
According to police, a burnt body of an unidentified young woman was discovered by some goatherds in a 60ft deep pit in a secluded forest area at Amaithi Cholai near Tharumathupatti - Pandrimalai Road towards Kodaikanal. The Kannivadi police registered a case of suspicious death and were investigating to establish the identity of the deceased.
During investigation, the deceased woman was identified as Mariammal, 23, an orphan who was staying in a children's home in Madurai until she finished her schooling. Police said that the girl's boyfriend, Praveen, came forward to identify her. The two of them were in a relationship for a year and were working together at a clothing store in Dindigul.
However, police became suspicious of Praveen's involvement in the murder. Following inquiry and further probe, Praveen confessed to killing Mariammal. Praveen told the police that Mariammal had expressed her strong desire to get married after the two got into a sexual relationship, but since he refused, they had frequent disputes.
An enraged Praveen subsequently lured Mariammal to a secluded spot, murdered her, and set her body on fire to dispose of evidence. Police said that Praveen initially came forward to identify Mariammal's body in fear as he wanted to throw police off his track. Praveen was arrested on Monday and further investigation was on.
