Commuter assaults traffic cop when flagged down for helmet violation
Surat: An on-duty traffic police constable was allegedly slapped and verbally abused by a man who was riding pillion on a moped on Monday morning.
Lalji Jetani, a constable with Surat traffic police's Region 1, was on duty near Rachna Circle when the accused, Mahendra Rana alias Gullo, allegedly grabbed him by the collar, slapped him and verbally abused him.
Jetani was working with fellow constables Jyoti Ramesh and TRB volunteers Kamini Ramchandra, Bhavesh Dhodiya and Jitendra Nanubhai.
At about 9.45am, a moped being driven by a man without a helmet and carrying a pillion rider was going from Kapodra Crossroads to Rachna Circle. Jetani tried to take a photo of the violation with his mobile phone for legal action under the MV Act.
The pillion rider, Rana, then got off and told the driver to flee. The driver pushed Jetani and got away. Rana then sat on the moped and began arguing with Jetani. He allegedly used offensive language and threatened him by saying, "You don't know me, my name is Mahendra alias Gullo, if you stop my moped again, I will kill you."
Jetani called the police control room and a PCR van soon arrived. The pillion rider identified himself as Mahendra alias Gullo, a resident of Bombay Colony in Kapodra.
A complaint was filed against Rana alleging that he argued with a govt servant and obstructed him in his duty, used offensive language, grabbed his shirt collar, slapped him and threatened to kill him.
Kapodra police booked Rana under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Sections 121(2), 296(B), 351(3) and 54.
