Surat: Sarthana police arrested a man who pretended to be police sub-inspector (PSI) and threatened actual policemen, to try and secure the release of two men who were caught driving vehicles while drunk. The accused, Ronak Kothari, said he was a PSI with a vigilance squad in Gandhinagar. When the cops asked him for his identity card, he couldn't produce it and was arrested.
Police booked him for impersonating a govt officer and also booked his drunk friends.
Sarthana police inspector Meenaba Zala told TOI: "During traffic operations in Sarthana, two individuals were caught driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. Both created a ruckus and Kothari arrived at the spot. He threatened field staff to release both the men, saying he was a PSI. As people had gathered, the police staff called a PCR van and brought all three men to Sarthana police station for further proceedings."
At the police station, Kothari claimed to be a PSI in the vigilance squad under DySP R C Rana in Gandhinagar. "I asked for his police identity card and he said he was not carrying it as he was on leave. Sarthana police then conducted a thorough inquiry and found out the truth. A search of his mobile phone uncovered photos of him in the uniform of a police inspector, seated in an office that looked like a police station. We also found the number of DySP R C Rana on his mobile, but it turned out to belong to Kothari himself," said Zala.
Sarthana police are investigating whether Kothari masqueraded as a police officer earlier to extract financial gain from citizens. The Sarthana inspector urged people to contact police if they were cheated by Kothari.
