Infant among three killed in accident on Kollidam bridge
Trichy: Three of a family, including an infant were killed, when a tourist van rammed their two-wheeler from behind on the Kollidam bridge on Chennai-Trichy national highway (NH) in Trichy city on Sunday.
Police identified the deceased as G Alex Vijay, 24, from Tirukoilur in Kallakurichi district. Alex was employed as a daily wager and would often travel to various districts for work. On Sunday morning, he along with his wife Arul Mary, 22, and their seven-month-old son Anthony Joshua were travelling in a two-wheeler for work.
While approaching the Kollidam bridge on the national highway, Alex, who was riding the bike, attempted to overtake a truck. While deviating to the right, police said that a tourist van approaching from behind hit the two-wheeler. All three members including the infant were thrown out of their bike. While Mary and Joshua succumbed to injuries on the spot, Vijay who was admitted to MGMGH with a hip fracture, succumbed to injuries without responding to treatment on Sunday evening.
Mortal remains of the victims were handed over to family members after the postmortem on Monday. Traffic north investigation wing police of Trichy city have registered a case.
This is the fourth fatal accident reported in the last five days in which eight people have lost their lives.
Citing that fatal accidents on national highways passing through Trichy city have been increasing this month, activists sought road safety audits on accident prone spots.
