In a career which had films like Bandit Queen, Elizabeth to the last year's release What's Love Got To Do With It?, what does he think makes a good director?
He says, "Observation. Log kehte hain, ‘Aise hi kyun baithe ho?’ Aise hi nahi baitha hoon, main observe kar raha hoon!
Main walk karne jata hoon toh observe karta hoon. Mujhe toh samajh nahi aata, log walk karte hain aur check karte hain kitne steps hue. Ye kab shuru hua? When I cycle, I observe. In my early days (as a filmmaker), I’d go to the airport and sit for hours, just observing. Somebody is laughing, someone is crying, kids are running to their grandparents -you can see all kinds of emotions at the airport. Sometimes I’d go to the railway station, and the moment the train starts moving, everyone becomes animated with loads of advice.”
Shekhar Kapur’s Masoom has a memorable station scene where Naseeruddin Shah’s character runs back to his son as the train starts to leaves the platform. Shekhar says, “He runs back to give him a water bottle in the train. It was not about the water bottle. It was that he didn’t want him to go."
