Over 2 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the US in 2025, according to the American Cancer Society. More than 385,000 Brits receive a cancer diagnosis, every year. WHO notes that cancer is the second leading cause of death globally. With cancer cases and deaths on the rise, more than ever, what if simple lifestyle and diet changes can make changes? Dr. Rupy Aujla, a London-based doctor, specializing in General Practice and Emergency Medicine, and also a best-selling author, has recently shared a simple trick to reduce cancer risk.
The doctor and nutritionist, who has won the likes of many including Hollywood star Chris Evans, revealed that one small change to
diet can 'drastically cut cancer risk'.
Dr Rupy Aujla, who goes by the name Dr's Kitchen on TikTok revealed that adding some fruit, vegetables, nuts, or seed every day can reduce the risk of cancer. In the video he stated, that "eating just one portion of fruit, vegetable, nut or seed extra per day can actually have a cumulative effect over time to drastically reduce your cancer risk. It could be as simple as adding an onion to your meal, changing your snacks up for fruits, or my favourite is every week, finding a random seasonal vegetable like this celeriac and choosing a recipe to make from it that week."
The expert also noted that even though the evidence shows one needs to have 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, for the optimal benefits, “you can start small by just adding one extra fruit, vegetable, nut or seed every day, and that will certainly compound to have benefits over the long term."
CDC recommends adults consume 1.5–2 cup-equivalents of fruits and 2–3 cup-equivalents of vegetables daily. The benefits include boosting the immune system, preventing obesity, and warding off type-2 diabetes and some cancers. Incorporating fruits, vegetables, and nuts in the daily diet is also beneficial for the gut and overall health.
Research from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, which looked at the
diets of half a million people, found that people, who consumed two and a half portions (200g) of fruits and vegetables daily had a three percent reduced cancer risk. Also, eating the recommended five portions led to a nine percent reduction, while over eight portions resulted in an 11 percent decrease in risk.
