Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari marks a defining moment in Formula 1 history, and former Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug has expressed confidence in the seven-time world champion’s ability to achieve unprecedented success with the Italian team. As Hamilton embarks on his new journey, Haug has voiced both admiration and a tinge of sadness over the Briton’s departure from Mercedes, where he spent 12 remarkable seasons.

Norbert Haug Backs Lewis Hamilton for Eighth World Title with Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari was one of the most significant moves in F1’s modern era. Having worked with Hamilton during his early years through McLaren’s partnership with Mercedes, Haug has been a witness to the Briton’s relentless drive. Despite Hamilton’s age, Haug remains optimistic about his competitiveness, stating, “Anyone who thinks that he will give up at 40 and step on the gas less and work less intensively will be wrong. He will give everything [at Ferrari]. I absolutely trust him to deliver the maximum possible performance in the race.”

The switch to Ferrari represents a fresh challenge, but with Hamilton’s experience, determination, and skill, Haug sees no reason why the 40-year-old cannot capture an eighth world title. “And if the car is good, why shouldn’t it work out with the eighth title?” he added.
The scars of Hamilton’s controversial defeat in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix remain fresh in Haug’s memory. He did not hesitate to call out the contentious end to the season, stating, “That really was a stolen title – there’s no other way to put it – due to the wrong safety car decision at the time.” The race, which saw Max Verstappen capitalize on a controversial race control decision, ultimately denied Hamilton a record-breaking championship.
Since then, Mercedes struggled to regain dominance, particularly with the regulatory changes introduced in 2022. Despite his final seasons with the Silver Arrows being underwhelming, Hamilton’s hunger for success has not waned. His move to Ferrari is a testament to his belief in his ability to compete at the highest level.

As Hamilton turns a new page in his career, Haug’s endorsement adds weight to the expectations surrounding the Briton’s Ferrari stint. With the right machinery, Hamilton may still have the last word in his pursuit of greatness.
