A great win for Rory and we will be back again soon at Majors

The author, along with fellow Indian-origin golfers Akshay Bhatia and Aaron Rai, competed in the 89th Masters, witnessing Rory McIlroy's victory and career Grand Slam. While their finishes were modest, they acknowledge the growing Indian presence in golf, fueled by youth interest and representation across various tours.

It was not the best of weeks for me or for that matter for Akshay (Bhatia) and Aaron (Rai), but what a week it was at the 89th Masters. We had our moments on the amazing Augusta National and of course Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau and others made it an outstanding week of high-quality golf, which the spectators thronged to a full week.
From the first practice day to Sunday, when Scheffler put the Green Jacket around Rory’s shoulders, it was an un -forgettable week. Rory was a deserving winner, and he has been waiting for the Green Jacket for long and has now completed the career Slam, too.

All three of us, players of Indian-origin, made the cut but had modest finishes with Aaron and me in Top-30 and Akshay just around Top-40. All of us had begun very well but were unable to maintain that. Aaron was T-27, I was T-29 and Akshay was T-42.
But be sure, we are going to be here for a long time and will be back at the Augusta National. Hopefully we will be able to come to India in the near future and we can help pro -mote the game among the youth. We have already seen how Indian youngsters are showing great interest in golf—we had a young player from India in the Drive, Chip and Putt finals and in the past, we have had Indians in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA).
We also have a Indian player on the Korn Ferry and we are on the main PGA Tour. So, there is fair amount of ‘India’ in top class golf. That will only grow in the time to come. Coming back to the final round, the idea was to try and get some early momentum.
I was hitting the ball really nicely this week, probably the best I’ve hit it this year, but the scores may not show that. I’m enjoying it a lot more on the golf course again and not getting as frustrated. It’s hard when the results aren’t coming. But the grind is still fun and putting in the work is fun and seeing little improvements here and there. There are three more Majors to come, and we will also try and make the Ryder Cup team, so there is a lot to play for.
