Eagles swap C.J. Gardner-Johnson for Texans' Kenyon Green in roster move

The Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans have made a significant trade, reshaping their rosters ahead of the upcoming season. According to multiple reports, the Texans are sending offensive lineman Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round selection.


Gardner-Johnson, a key contributor to Philadelphia’s Super Bowl-winning season in 2017, has two years remaining on his contract, valued at $8.5 million and $11.5 million, respectively. Over the past two seasons, he has proven to be one of the league’s premier ball-hawking safeties, recording six interceptions and 15 pass deflections. Last season, he notched 59 tackles, 12 pass breakups, two tackles for loss, and one interception in 16 games.
The Texans, seeking a long-term answer at safety following Eric Murray’s departure to Jacksonville, view Gardner-Johnson as a crucial addition to their defense. Jimmie Ward remains on the roster, but repeated injuries have impacted his effectiveness since joining from San Francisco. Pairing Gardner-Johnson with All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, and emerging rookie Calen Bullock could give Houston one of the most formidable secondaries in the NFL.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia hopes to revive Kenyon Green’s career under longtime offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland. Selected 15th overall out of Texas A&M, Kenyon Green struggled with consistency in Houston but now gets a fresh start in a system known for developing elite offensive linemen. With the potential loss of Mekhi Becton to free agency, Kenyon Green provides depth and could carve out a role as a fringe starter.

Both teams stand to benefit from this trade in critical ways.
