Daniel Kelly compares Miami Hurricanes’ quarterback Cam Ward with Patrick Mahomes

Back in January 2025, former NFL scout Daniel Kelly spoke about the Miami Hurricanes' popular quarterback Cam Ward. While talking about his athletic prowess, he went on to compare Ward with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. As reported by the media outlet First Mound Rock, Kelly even recalled about the time he had seen Cam Ward for the first time. He mentioned-
“While I’ve maintained a first-round grade on Ward from the time I laid eyes on his 2022 tape ⎯and again in 2023, transferring to Miami proved to be the right move on the draft chessboard.”
Kelly further went on to compare him with the Kansas City Chiefs’ popular quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He said-
“In two seasons with the Cougars, Ward reminded me of Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts. This season at Miami ⎯he reminded me of Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes. There I said it.”
Storm Sessions Episode 1: Cam Ward

Despite being a successful NFL star, Cam Ward was more inclined towards the world of the NBA before stepping into football. During an appearance on the Miami Hurricanes’ YouTube channel, Cam Ward revealed his love for basketball and his favorite NBA star Kobe Bryant. He said-
“My favorite player is Kobe. So I just wanted to play basketball. I played that all my life. I got a chance to play in the EYBL circuit my freshman year of high school. I switched to the Adidas Gauntlet after that. I got a chance to play against Cade Cunningham. He was the number one draft pick a couple of years ago. He's like that. Played against R.J. Hampton.”
He further mentioned-
“So it really sets in the different type of athlete you’ve got to be to play basketball, especially at my height. There’s only one position somebody 6'2, 6'3 can play, as guard. You’ve got to be able to move, move. Basketball will always be my first love, though, because I feel like I was made to be a basketball player. I will try to translate that to the football field a little.”
Cam Ward is only 22 now and with the kind of discipline, perseverance, confidence and aggression he displays during the games, he has a long way to go in the world of the National Football League.
