has responded to US President
Donald Trump's AI (artificial intelligence) Action Plan. The tech giant has stressed the importance of establishing appropriate policy frameworks to secure America's position as an AI powerhouse. The company also believes that AI is a significant breakthrough that can revolutionise healthcare, accelerate scientific discovery, and transform the economy for the better. Google shared its ideas on this matter in its response to the Office of Science and Technology Policy’s Request for Information.
What Google said about AI Action Plan
In a blog post, the company wrote: “Make no mistake: Policy decisions will shape the outcome of the current global AI competition. A pro-innovation approach that protects national security and enables widespread benefits will help us realise AI’s transformative potential and ensure that America’s lead endures. Google is committed to doing its part, including by working with the federal government to ensure the success of the AI Action Plan.”
What Google recommended about the AI Action Plan
For this, Google recommended focusing on three key areas — investing in AI, accelerating government AI adoption and promoting international pro-innovation approaches.
Firstly, the company calls for major investment in AI. This involves reforming policies to address the surging energy demands that come with expanding AI infrastructure, while also implementing balanced export controls that protect national security and enable US companies to provide AI services abroad.
In addition, ensuring that American scientists have access to advanced computational resources is critical, which can be achieved through new partnerships with national labs. Establishing policy frameworks to preserve fair data access and adopting a risk-based approach to AI applications are also essential steps to avoid a patchwork of inconsistent state-level regulations.
The response also emphasises the need to accelerate and modernise government AI adoption. By leading by example through the implementation of multi-vendor, interoperable AI solutions and streamlining procurement processes, the government can drive more effective and efficient use of emerging technologies across its operations.
Lastly, it advocates for promoting pro-innovation approaches on the international stage. This includes championing market-driven and widely adopted technical standards—building on the Commerce Department’s initiatives with organisations such as the International Standards Organization—and collaborating with industry partners and allied countries to develop protocols and benchmarks for addressing the risks associated with frontier AI systems.
Additionally, Google has also encouraged the Trump administration to work on dismantling restrictive foreign AI barriers to support sustained American leadership in AI.
