Actor Aaron Ashmore, known for his roles in Warehouse 13, Veronica Mars, and Ginny & Georgia, recently shared a shocking revelation about his marriage and separation. During a candid conversation on the Inside of You podcast with his former Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum, Ashmore, 45, revealed that he and his wife, Zoe Kate, had actually separated years ago—during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When Rosenbaum asked about the most difficult period in his life, Ashmore didn’t hesitate and spoke his heart out about the situation. He opened up about how the pandemic was an incredibly tough time for him and his family.
“You know, COVID was a really tough time,” he reflected. “We had a brand new baby, I was home with a 3-year-old and a newborn, and my dad got sick during that time. He passed away, and then, about eight months later, my wife and I decided to separate.” For Ashmore, it felt like life kept throwing one hardship after another in his way. “There was about a two-and-a-half-year period where it was just like … the hits just kept coming, man,” he admitted.
Before the former couple decided to go their separate ways, Ashmore and Kate made efforts to work through their challenges and be together in the marriage. They spent a year in couples therapy, trying to rebuild what they had. Given that Kate is a therapist herself, seeking professional help was something she strongly believed in.
“We were actually in therapy for our marriage. My ex is a therapist, so there was always a lot of encouragement to do therapy, and so we did,” he explained. “We did our due diligence for our relationship and our marriage.” Even after their split, Ashmore continued therapy on his own, working through the grief of losing both his father and his marriage in such a short span of time.
Despite their separation, Ashmore and Kate remain dedicated to co-parenting their two young daughters, Esme and Margot. While the past few years have been filled with loss and change, he continues to move forward, balancing fatherhood and his career. His honesty about therapy and emotional struggles offers a rare glimpse into the real-life challenges that many people—celebrities or not—face behind closed doors. Through it all, Ashmore’s story is a reminder that even in the toughest times, healing and growth are possible.
