Nagpur: A man carrying Rs9.6 lakh unaccounted cash was apprehended by the Railway Security Force (RPF) at Gondia railway station on Wednesday during a routine inspection.
The suspect, identified as Rakesh Ahuja, was unable to provide valid documents for the cash, prompting officials to seize it and inform the
Income Tax Department for further investigation.
During a routine check at around 5 pm near platform no 3, in front of the Gondia station manager's office, security personnel noticed a man behaving suspiciously while carrying a black-blue handbag. Upon questioning, Ahuja identified himself as a 51-year-old resident of Malviya Ward, near Ramchandra Oil Mill, Srinagar, Gondia.
Ahuja initially claimed that his bag contained Rs8.1 lakh cash. However, after a thorough inspection in the presence of witnesses and videography, officials found an additional Rs1.5 lakh in his possession, bringing the total to Rs9.6 lakh. When asked to produce valid documents justifying the transportation of such a large sum by train, he failed to provide any proof or transaction records.
Suspecting illegal cash smuggling, the RPF immediately alerted the Income Tax department, which took over the investigation. The origin and intended use of the seized cash are now under scrutiny. Officials stated that further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the probe by the Income Tax department.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of assistant sub-inspector Dharmendra Kumar alongside other officers and the Crime Intelligence Bureau (CIB) of Gondia. The task team, led by inspector in-charge Kulwant Singh, has been lauded for its swift and efficient action.
The RPF has urged citizens to report any suspicious activity involving large cash transactions, narcotics, or contraband smuggling through railway networks. Officials emphasised the importance of people's cooperation in curbing illegal activities and ensuring safer railway travel.
