Panaji: BJP on Friday urged the election commission to weed out illegally enrolled voters and cleanse the electoral roll. BJP state president Damodar ‘Damu’ Naik submitted a memorandum to the chief election commissioner and demanded a check on the veracity of large numbers of voters registered under a single house number and the deletion of bogus registrations.
Naik said that the existing drive to link the Aadhaar card with the name of the voter in the electoral roll is a good practice and needs to be expedited in view of state elections slated for 2027.
“We request you to ensure that voters enrolled under a single house number be brought together for ease of identification. For example, first-time voters and new additions residing under the same house number get added to the electoral roll in chronological order, resulting in residents of the same house being spread out over the electoral roll,” the BJP state president said.
He said that there is an urgent need to cleanse the roll of fraudulent and malicious voters. “This will increase voter-level confidence and bring in significant and correct voting figures. In spite of the best attempts by your office, at times, it is noticed that voters who moved and are no longer part of the place of residence continue to figure in the roll,” Naik said. He said that deceased voters should be removed from the electoral rolls by integrating with the births and deaths records. Duplicate voters, if any, continue to be a malice, taking undue advantage and enrolling themselves at more than one location.
“The exercise of weeding out duplicate voters should be carried out across Bharat to eliminate voters who enrol at several places. We request you to check for the veracity of a large number of voters registered under a single house number and delete bogus registrations,” Naik said.
He said, “All deletions and additions in the electoral roll should be in concurrence with BLA 1 and BLA 2 appointed by the political parties and not unilateral decisions of the BLOs, which is reported in many instances.”
