KDKCE hosts enriching seminar on ‘BIS Standards in civil engineering’
Nagpur: Department of civil engineering at KDK College of Engineering (KDKCE), in association with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), organized a one-day seminar on ‘BIS Standards' aimed at enhancing awareness among students about the significance, scope, and applications of standardisation in civil engineering.
The chief guest for the event was Virendra Dehadrai, senior structural consultant and former secretary of the Indian Concrete Institute, Nagpur chapter. In his expert address, Dehadrai emphasised the pivotal role of BIS in formulating standards related to construction materials, methods, and testing procedures. He noted that adherence to these standards ensures quality, durability, stability, and safety in civil engineering projects.
As part of the seminar, an intercollegiate PowerPoint presentation and quiz competition was organized on the theme ‘BIS Standards in civil engineering'. The event saw enthusiastic participation, with 32 student teams presenting their work and 208 students taking part in the quiz competition, contributing to the event's grand success.
The valedictory ceremony and prize distribution were conducted in the presence of Shriniwas Warenekar, director of Integrity Construction Pvt Ltd, who commended the students for their active involvement. Principal Valsson Varghese encouraged students to participate in such knowledge-driven initiatives, highlighting their importance in bridging academic learning with industry practices.
Swapneel Satone, HoD, CE, gave an overview of the department's contributions and spoke on the relevance of BIS standards in shaping professional competency among budding engineers. The event was coordinated by BS Ruprai, with support from faculty members Prof M Umare, P Bisen, V. Vaidya, A Shende, and Prof DB Awachat.
