Ranchi: The district education department of Ranchi has launched an innovative initiative where students are entrusted with the responsibility to maintain daily attendance records in govt schools.
At Government Middle School, Morum, Riya Kumari, a Class IV student, demonstrated this new practice by efficiently managing her class's attendance. During the process, students responded with 'yes' to their names, while absences were duly noted, including one student who was away visiting her grandmother.
Similarly, at PM Shri Government Middle School, Gramvikas Silli, Class VII student Anup Kumar Mahto independently handled the attendance duties, exemplifying the successful implementation of this programme across different schools.
The district superintendent of education (DSE) said, "This initiative aims to foster a sense of responsibility, self-confidence, and leadership among students. By engaging them in practical administrative tasks, we're helping them develop a deeper understanding of school management and classroom discipline."
According to the official guidelines, students from Class III onwards are entrusted with this responsibility. The task rotates among students, ensuring equal participation opportunities while remaining under the supervision of class teachers. To maintain record accuracy and authenticity, strict protocols prohibit any alterations or tampering with the attendance register.
School administrators have been instructed to document these activities through photographs and videos, which must be shared regularly via an official district-level WhatsApp group. This documentation helps monitor the programme's implementation and success across different schools.
The DSE said that beyond developing administrative skills, the initiative seeks to strengthen students' emotional connection with their schools. "When students actively participate in school management, they develop a stronger sense of belonging and responsibility towards their educational institution," the DSE added.
