Nimde Kathe Movie Review : A unique attempt to mirror middle-class struggles that loses ground

Critic's Rating: 2.5/5
Vikram (Abhilash Dalapathy), a life insurance agent, leads a simple and content middle-class life with his wife, Kavya (Rashika Shetty). Everything seems fine until he consults a doctor for a personal issue — his inability to control his erection. The doctor prescribes him medication but advises him to just keep it in his pocket, assuring him that things will improve on its own. A year later, Vikram returns, now struggling with the opposite problem— no erection. To his shock, the doctor reveals that he never gave him any real medicine; it was just a placebo. The real cause of Vikram’s dysfunction is stress — stress that he has been suppressing, and not sharing with anyone.

As the film progresses, we learn the root of Vikram’s turmoil. He is drowning in debt due to a small loan that spiraled out of control because of high interest. His financial troubles worsen, and instead of receiving support, he is mistreated by those around him. He loses his job, his dignity, and even his will to live. His isolation and hopelessness push him to the brink, forcing him to confront his darkest thoughts. Will Vikram find a way out of this crisis, or will he succumb to his struggles? This forms the crux of Nimde Kathe.

Nimde Kathe, which translates to Your Own Story, sets out with an honest intention—to reflect the harsh realities of everyday life. The film doesn’t rely on exaggerated drama but instead presents struggles that feel painfully real. Whether it’s financial burdens, emotional suppression, or society’s indifference to a person’s suffering, the film holds a mirror to experiences that many have either lived through or witnessed. The director’s vision of making this our story works in concept, as the film does capture relatable moments that stay with the audience.

The film’s biggest strength lies in its ability to resonate with the audience. Almost everyone can see a piece of themselves or someone they know in Vikram’s struggles. The exploration of financial instability, stress-induced health problems, and the loneliness of suffering in silence adds emotional weight to the narrative.

Abhilash Dalapathi, as Vikram, delivers a solid performance, convincingly portraying a man sinking under the weight of his problems. He shoulders the film with sincerity, making his breakdowns feel authentic. However, the rest of the cast remains average, with weak dialogue delivery and inconsistent language skills pulling the film down.

While the film’s themes are strong, its storytelling lacks cohesion. The first half sets up Vikram’s personal problem, making the audience believe the film will explore that journey, which is still considered a taboo by many. However, post-interval, the narrative completely shifts to his financial struggles. While both conflicts stem from stress, the transition is abrupt, making the film feel like two separate stories forced together. The back-and-forth editing further complicates things, making it difficult to track the timeline and stay engaged.

Technically, the film struggles to create the depth its story demands. The cinematography and editing fail to add weight to Vikram’s turmoil, making key moments feel underwhelming. The music, which could have strengthened the emotional beats, is disappointingly below average and adds little to the film’s impact.

Nimde Kathe is a film with a strong intent and a deeply relatable premise. It effectively highlights the silent battles people fight every day, but its execution prevents it from making a lasting impact. While Abhilash Dalapathi’s performance and the film’s real-life connections keep it engaging, the disjointed narrative, weak supporting performances, and technical shortcomings hold it back. It’s a film that could have been powerful but ultimately doesn’t come together as well as it should.
