KOLKATA: India’s dream of winning an Olympic medal in archery got a shot in the arm with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcing on Wednesday the addition of compound mixed team event to the archery programme in the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
The Games will now feature this new medal event, in addition to the existing five recurve events in men’s and women’s individual as well as men’s and women’s team and mixed team events.

The news came as a double bonanza for the Indian compound archers just minutes after their men’s team opened the country’s medals tally at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 with a bronze in Florida on Wednesday. The Indian trio of Abhishek Verma, Rishabh Yadav and Ojas Deotale defeated Denmark 230-223 in the bronze-medal playoff match.
India were unable to field a women’s team due to visa issues.
Earlier, the men’s team, which qualified fourth, edged past Guatemala 220-218 in the quarterfinals but narrowly lost to Italy in the shootouts in the semifinals.
“I was waiting for this news for the past 22 years and now it has happened,�?star compound archer Verma said. “We will now train harder for the Olympic medal,�?he added.
“We are now on par with recurve; we are an Olympic event now,�?Deotale said amidst rejoicing from his fellow archers.
“An amazing news. I am super thrilled,�?Jyothi Surekha Vennam said.
India have grown into a dominant force in compound archery over the years and are currently ranked second in the world behind the United States in compound mixed team event.
Dhiraj, Anshika join action in FloridaIn a last-minute dash to Florida after getting their US visas, recurve archers Dhiraj Bommadevara and Anshika Kumari managed to join the competition just before the start of their events on Wednesday.
Exempted from taking part in the official practice session, both archers qualified as top Indians in their respective categories at sixth and 11th positions, respectively.
