Delhi NCR has been dealing with the hottest summer season. The IMD declares a heatwave as the highest temperature reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains and 37 degrees Celsius in coastal regions. With temperatures soaring as high as this, it is essential to keep a track of what you eat and drink to prevent heatwave. Here are some ways to stay protected:
What to eat and drink during a heatwave?
During a heatwave, you must protect your body from the heat and hydrate with enough fluids. Smart drinking and eating will cool and protect you from heat illnesses.
According to Dr. Rajiv Dang, Senior Director and HOD - Internal Medicine and Medical Director, Max Hospital, Gurgaon, “For beverages, plain water itself may not be adequate in hot climatic conditions. It is better to have fluids which help in replacing lost electrolytes. Coconut water, lemon water, home-made fruit juices, buttermilk (lassi), thin soups, and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) are among the best choices. They also hydrate, in addition to replacing vital lost salts and minerals in sweat.”

Do you think street food is safe to eat during a heatwave?
Do not consume ice and roadside vendors' beverages since they are made in unhygienic environments and may lead to waterborne infections. Open or market ice is also not safe since it is likely to contain contaminants.
All normal meals are fine to eat, but the food must be fresh, well-cooked, and stored. Avoid street food or any unhygienic, uncovered food, especially during the hot summer. Light, easily digestible food with a combination of vegetables, fruits, and liquids is ideal.
A dash of extra salt or a squeeze of lemon juice in food and drink may be helpful to replace sodium lost in sweat. But patients on drugs like diuretics (for blood pressure or heart disease) need to monitor their fluid intake carefully and monitor their weight to avoid issues.
In short, smart food and drink choices, supplemented by protection from heat exposure, will take you a great distance towards guaranteeing your comfort and safety while you are under a heatwave.
How to stay protected
First and foremost, do all you can to avoid direct contact with heat whenever possible. Wear protective gear like umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, or caps when you go outdoors. Shower frequently or wear a wet cloth to control your body temperature.
