One in five Apple iPhones sold across the world are now ‘made in India’ as production hits $22 billion

Apple has significantly increased its iPhone production in India to $22 billion in the fiscal year ending March 2025, representing a 60% jump from the previous year, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The Cupertino giant now manufactures one in five iPhones in India, marking a substantial shift away from its traditional Chinese manufacturing base.
Of the total Indian production, approximately $17.4 billion worth of iPhones were exported from the country during this period, as confirmed by India's technology minister on April 8.
The production boost follows disruptions in China caused by harsh COVID lockdowns that affected Apple's largest manufacturing plant. Foxconn Technology Group's factory in southern India now handles the majority of Indian iPhone assembly, with Tata Group's electronics division—which acquired Wistron Corp. and controls Pegatron Corp.'s operations—serving as another key supplier.

Bloomberg reports that shipments of India-made iPhones to the United States accelerated after President Donald Trump announced plans for "reciprocal" tariffs in February. The Trump administration recently exempted electronics goods, including smartphones, from these tariffs, providing temporary relief for Apple.
Although, the exemption isn’t permanent and a separate 20% duty on Chinese goods remains in place, likely encouraging Apple to continue diversifying its supply chain. Moving away from China entirely would be challenging, as Bloomberg Intelligence previously estimated it could take eight years to shift just 10% of Apple's production capacity from China.
India now produces Apple's complete iPhone range, including the premium titanium Pro models. The manufacturing expansion has been supported by state subsidies tied to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of transforming India into a manufacturing hub. Modi is further enhancing electronics component manufacturing with $2.7 billion in new financial incentives.
Apple currently holds nearly 8% market share in India's smartphone market, with sales reaching almost $8 billion in fiscal 2024.
