Vadodara: Workers of the city unit of the Congress party and residents of certain societies on New Sama Road were detained on Tuesday, after they held a demonstration to protest problems in the supply of drinking water in the area.
The protests were held by residents of Mahakali Society, Sachchidanand Society, Amrapali Society and Radhanagar. Congress members from Ward 2 of the civic body mobilized residents for the protest on Tuesday morning.
Congress spokesman Nikul Patel stated the residents had made repeated representations about the matter, but it was not resolved. He added that after repeated attempts, residents decided to come together for a rally. They planned to take out a rally to the Ward 2 office.
When the protestors did not disperse despite orders, police took them away from the spot by force. Patel said some 20 persons were detained by the police. Many protestors resisted being detained and had to be physically removed. Patel said that apart from political workers, citizens were also detained. He added that it seemed that people no longer had the right to raise their demands or hold protests.
