Shah Rukh Khan's recent appearance at an awards ceremony, adorned in a dazzling diamond-studded neckpiece, sent the internet into a frenzy. His look not only solidified his status as a style icon but also underscored the growing acceptance of diamond jewellery among men. Diamonds are no longer reserved for women or special occasions, diamonds have become a staple in men's fashion, with celebrities and influencers leading the charge.
Fashion experts Pyu Mishra and Isha Bhansali weigh in on the trend. "Diamonds have always been a man's best friend," says Pyu. "Originally worn by royalty, including Indian Maharajahs, diamonds continue to appeal to new generations of young men both on and off red carpet. Isha adds, "The hip-hop movement of the 80s popularized diamond jewellery among men, and now we're seeing a resurgence of this trend, with men incorporating diamonds into their everyday style."
Stylist Aastha Sharma recently styled actor Prateik Smita Patil in a pearl diamond neckpiece. “This is not a new culture but even today men have been dawning diamonds in minimalistic ways i.e diamond rings, bracelets with watches, depends on the styling and how it has been put together. For weddings, this can be elaborated. For grooms, wearing diamonds is a cool things. Men who combine in their look, they can totally go for diamonds to make it look chic ad classic. This trend is just coming in and it will be impactful in the coming seasons.”
So, how can men stylishly don diamond pieces? Isha, who styled Ayushmann Khurrana with an ice diamond neck piece, offers valuable advice: "Choose geometric designs, as they're more versatile and can be paired with various outfits. Keep the rest of the look simple, and don't over-accessorize. A diamond necklace or bracelet can make a statement on its own. Don’t do studs and neck pieces together.”
According to Namita Kothari, founder of a lab-grown diamond jewellery brand, "There has been a remarkable shift in how men perceive and embrace diamond jewellery, with growing acceptance and demand in recent years." She reveals they have witnessed a significant increase in male customers, with some even marking personal milestones by investing in diamond pieces. “At our store, nearly 10% of our customers are men purchasing diamonds for themselves. What's particularly fascinating is that some have even marked personal milestones—like getting their first ear piercing—by investing in a 1-carat solitaire earring. This trend highlights how diamonds are no longer just about tradition or gifting but have become a symbol of self-expression and individuality for men,” she states.
Jeweller Sheetal Ranka notes, "Jewellery for men has evolved beyond investment; it's now a statement of personality and style."
PQ: The influence of celebrity culture has played a key role in accelerating this shift, breaking stereotypes and pushing this trend into the mainstream, Namita Kothari
As the men's jewellery market continues to grow, with projections indicating a global value of USD 75.9 billion by 2034, it's clear that diamonds are no longer just a woman's best friend. Men are embracing diamond jewellery as a way to express themselves, showcase their confidence, and add a touch of luxury to their everyday style
