is introducing changes to Google Play on Android devices to improve the discoverability and user engagement with app widgets. Google announced a series of updates designed to showcase apps that offer widgets, making it easier for users to find and utilise them.
“Google Play now offers significant enhancements to widget discovery, creating a prime opportunity to re-engage with your users on a deeper level,” Google said in a blog post, adding that “these key improvements” are coming soon to Google Play on Android phones, tablets and foldables.
The upcoming changes include:
New search filter for widgets: Users will be able to specifically search for apps that offer widgets, streamlining the discovery process.
Widget badges on app detail pages: Apps with widgets will feature badges on their detail pages, highlighting this functionality to users.
Curated editorial page dedicated to widgets: A dedicated page will showcase collections of high-quality widgets, providing users with curated recommendations and inspiration.
Why Google is bringing this change
These changes aim to address developer concerns about the visibility and adoption of widgets. By improving discoverability, Google hopes to encourage developers to continue investing in creating and maintaining widgets.
“Historically, one of the challenges with investing in widget development has been discoverability and user understanding. You’ve asked for better ways for users to find and utilise your widgets, and we’re delivering,” said product manager Yinka Taiwo-Peters.
“With these new discovery tools, Google Play is making it easier than ever for users to find and love your widgets. Now is the time to leverage the power of widgets and enhance your Android app experience,” the company added.
