Oscar winner Cate Blanchett considering retirement from Hollywood: 'I am serious about giving up acting'

Two-time Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has hinted that she may just be ready to kiss the big screen goodbye and step away from her acting career.
In an interview with Radio Times, where she was promoting her first-ever audioplay, Cate opened up about her desire to explore new ventures beyond the Hollywood film industry. “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett said.
“There are a lot of things I want to do with my life,” she admitted.
While not announcing an immediate retirement, Blanchett shared her plans for a future exit from films as she does not intend to remain in the profession indefinitely. While she has been an awards show favourite, with her many nominations and wins in acting categories, she claimed that getting used to a publicised life was difficult. "I’ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable,” she admitted. “It’s taken me a long time to remotely get comfortable with the idea of being photographed.”
This announcement comes after the actress confessed at the Rotterdam Film Festival that she never imagined a future in cinema. “I was resigned, happily, to a career in theatre. I didn’t think I was that girl,” she said.
Most recently, Blanchett wrapped her 6-week limited engagement of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull in London’s Barbican Theatre, which is currently eyeing a 2026 Broadway run.
She was also seen on the big screen in the espionage thriller Black Bag alongside Michael Fassbender. The Steven Soderbergh film earned $21 million at the domestic box office. She will next be seen starring opposite Adam Driver in Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming film, 'Father, Mother, Sister, Brother'.
